When Life Gets in The Way

I had the best session mapped out for a client.

It had it all.

Warts and all.

There were mobility drills carefully prescribed. A terrific strength and conditioning element and then a finisher to put a cherry on top.

Then she walked in. Rest assured she didn’t exactly skip in like usual. In a fleeting second ‘life’ got in the way. Kids were sick, work ‘sucked’, ate crap at the weekend etc etc 10 years ago I would have put the foot down and ploughed into that session with total disregard to what was in front of me.

Today is different. One of my mentors always used to say ‘prescribe what is in front of you’.

I appreciate the effort it takes to get to train with me. I do. And I am all one for results.

But you see you have these things called hormones.

They basically act as messengers telling you how to function. Get them right and you function just right. Get them wrong or out of balance and things work against you.

It is why I have come across individuals in my time who train 5-6 times per week and don’t lose a lb. My advice is to stop. After all the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result – right?

IN this case we changed it up.

There were low level conditioning drills that didn’t; require any additional thought and kept those hormonal reserves in tact. We didn’t let her go ‘overdrawn’ and still got a great workout in.

Some days you will feel like training – put your foot down when you do.

Other days you will feel like crawling up in a ball and avoiding life – ease off the pedal or skip and do something different.

Either way though be consistent just try and make a read on things because most times this wee little thing called ‘your life’ just gets in the way.
