Darren, like alot of busy working professionals, struggled with back pain and regarded his fitness levels as poor. After 15 years of feeling like this, procedure and a stint with a physiotherapist it was advised that he addressed this.

After struggling with lower back pain for over 15 years I finally underwent a procedure to in May 2021. After some rehab physio I was advised to join a gym to build up the muscles around my back to protect my dodgy disc. This led me to Sphere and an initial meeting with John where we discussed my reasons for wanting to join and any concerns that I had. I was concerned that my level of fitness was so poor that it would take forever to get back to a level where I could consider myself to be in good shape. I gave it a go, starting my first session the day after my meeting with John. 

It was important that Darren got the help, support and expertise to deal with his situation. A programme was designed to meet his needs and delivered through expert coaching.

I found the coaches to be first class, assessing where I was at initially and taking into account my back issues. They guided me through the program carefully until such time as they were satisfied that I was able to progress without causing any damage to my back.

Whilst coming out of pain was an important goal, like so many other personal training clients who visit us in Maynooth there are knock-on effects. He found himself getting fitter, stronger and his overall fitness improving. His lifestyle and nutrition improved too.

While my primary goal in joining Sphere was to strengthen up my back, I soon found that I was getting fitter and stronger generally. Soon, I was no longer even thinking about my back and was focusing on progression and improving my general strength and cardio fitness. I started to take an interest in my nutrition as well as my fitness.

A huge part of Darren’s success has been his consistency. The accountability, education and support have been just as important as ‘showing up’. Nothing needs to be perfect. But success comes through acrtion – no matter how small you ‘think’ it is.

So here I am now, 172 gym session later. I feel stronger, fitter, lighter and healthier than I have been in over 20 years. I don’t always feel energised to go to a gym session, however I remember John’s advice to just go and do something, even if it’s not the full workout – and I never regret going to the gym! The body scan is a great way of tracking progress, and it also gives you that bit of motivation to keep on track and stay away from the cookie jar!
